It seemed as though Single and Loving It and I were living the same life. I just wish I had an answer for her so I knew how to approach my own mother. God help us both.

Chapter 8

“My mother is so infuriating.” I groan the instant I walk through my apartment door.

Olivia sits on the couch with her laptop in front of her, shushing me and waving as she finishes her latest tutorial video.

I try to stay off frame as I meander to the kitchen to grab a bottle of water. I’d much prefer a glass of wine, but I’m so excited about my date with Collin that I don’t want anything to impede our evening, not even one glass.

“Last, but not least, I add a spritz of my setting spray and voila.” Olivia sprays her face with the spray before adding, “Perfect.” She giggles into the camera, actually giggles over her accomplishment.

Meanwhile, I’m leaning against the kitchen counter, waiting for her to finish.

“I hope you enjoyed today’s tutorial. Don’t forget to hit that like button, share these videos, subscribe to my channel and hit the little bell next to subscribe so you can be notified of all my future videos. On Monday I’ll be showing you how to achieve a fresh face in five minutes. And one last thing, don’t forget to enter my drawing to win your very own Beauty on a Budget bundle. Okay.” She makes an odd squeaking sound then singsongs, “Bye!”

As soon as her laptop is shut, I say, “Running over today?”

Olivia sighs and explains, “I got started late. Charles called to make sure you were on for tonight and then tried to change the time and meeting place twice. I had to put him in his place before I could start my video, and I needed a little pick me up before I could present myself to my fans.” Olivia waves her hand in front of her face and says, “So, how do I look?”

“Fabulous as always,” I say flatly.

“Well, boo hoo to you too. I hope you don’t plan on acting like that during your date with Collin?” Olivia takes a seat at the dining room table and waves me to sit down.

I fall into a chair across from her and say, “I’m sorry. I’m just so sick of my mother’s overbearing, overly dramatic matchmaking.” Before Olivia can even respond, I continue, “Do you know she called me four times today? Four. Because she has some new neighbor and she had to tell me all about how he’s attractive and young and single and probably still quite fertile. She actually told me I should get on the stick with this one. Can you believe her?” Again, I continue before Olivia can form a response. “And get this. He’s a priest. A fucking priest. She’s so excited about the prospect of having a holy man in the family. And she’s not even Catholic.” I suddenly realize my voice has raised about three octaves and try to calm myself down.
